the keynote address at the 2011 McMaster Innovation Showcase, hosted by the McMaster Industry
Liaison Office at McMaster University. This one-day event focused on bridging the gap between
research and commercialization, and linking faculty and student researchers with the local
business and investment community.
Cooper kicked off the innovation showcase with a presentation highlighting how important
innovation is to organizations, and how companies achieve successful product innovation. “Really,
innovation is the only game in town. You either succeed at this or die. But Failure is
common. For every nine new products launched, only one becomes a commercial success”,
Among the ten critical success factors that decide new product success, Dr. Cooper explained
to students and faculty how the importance of having a differentiated product that delivers
unique benefits and superior value to customers. Dr. Cooper also described the Stage-Gate
system, currently being used in over 80 percent of the world’s top 1,000 companies,
and demonstrated how the system can be adapted for large and small projects.
